Weekly Update – 1/28/11

We had a relatively short week this week. We started Monday with a great hike through the hills in our neighborhood. It was over a three-hour hike, and by the time we got home and had lunch, it was fairly late in the day. The twins worked on Literary Lessons from the Lord of the Rings and listened to another lecture by the Tolkien Professor.  Decca and I worked on his Poppy unit. The kids also practiced their music.

A poster Decca made as part of his Poppy unit. He learned about good vs. evil in the fantasy genre.

Tuesday morning we had to meet our wonderful ES for school. After that the kids did Time4Learning, Life of Fred, practiced music, and worked on their Eastern Hemisphere studies. We finished up Crispin this week, and I picked up two books for next week. One is the Wolves of Willoughby Chase, and the other is The Wall. The Wall is about the author’s childhood of growing up in Cold War–era Prague. It is illustrated throughout, and the twins already began reading it when it arrived in the mail. I love when a book grabs their attention immediately!

Wednesday is our music lesson day. We are out of the house from 9:45 until 2:00. The boys and I took Kingsley to the Huntington Dog Beach while Autry had homeschool choir. After choir everyone had their private lesson. Once we got home the twins did Time4learning and a LOF lesson. In the afternoon Decca came down with a fever, so he spent the rest of day watching movies on Netflix.

Thursday was our only full day of school. The twins worked on Time4Learning, Lord of the Rings, Life of Fred, music, and their Eastern Hemisphere study. Decca listened to me read Poppy. He still had a fever, so he wasn’t up for much else. The twins began making their own maps to go along with their map study in McDougal Littell World Cultures and Geography: Eastern Hemisphere.

Friday the twins went to the Homeschool Campus for their classes. Decca made several books inspired by the Poppy series.

The Adventures of Lungwort

After that they came home and started creating levels on Little Big Planet 2. The game is so creative that I let them work on it all day Friday. It was a great way to end the week.
