Weekly Update

Our week had a rough start due to the Labor Day weekend, but Wednesday went much better than Tuesday as did the rest of the week. Decca finished his MBTP unit on The People of Sparks and continued with his geography unit. The highlight of the week was working on a map of North America.

He also began working on Life of Fred fractions. He made it through the first three lessons. He loves Life of Fred and he loves Beast Academy, but he needs to rotate or he gets tired of the work. I will have him do a section in Beast Academy for a few weeks, then have him switch to Life of Fred for a set of lessons, and then go back to Beast Academy. It works for him, so it works for me.

Also this week he managed to watch a great deal of BrainPop. He watched all the videos that tied into his geography lessons.

He worked on his cursive, which is very difficult for him. To lighten it up he made cursive characters to help him along.

Other work he did this week – He began reading Inside Out and Back Again and learned all about Vietnam and the Vietnam War.

He was especially interested in Vietnamese cooking, and we watched some how-to cooking shows on YouTube on the subject. Decca also completed week 4 of his Latin, wrote a number of short stories, and worked on piano. Overall it was a good week, especially when you take into account the bad start we had in the beginning.

The twins continued along with their high school work. You can read more about what their first year of high school looks like here. It is hard to detail everything they did this week but here is a few highlights.

They continued working on their Spencerian cursive. They love it!

Notice our very messy table – I’m just trying to keep it real here!

They received their new microscope in the mail and we did several labs for biology relating to it. This was probably their favorite activity they did this week.

Only a homeschooler would have these books on her kindle 🙂

They both began reading another Agatha Christie novel. Agatha Christie is their new favorite author and they are loving every book of hers that they have read.

They also began the second half of their Latin this week. They are not doing a major Latin program this year as we had originally planned. Instead they are finishing up with Getting Started with Latin and then they will move on to something else (I don’t know what yet).

A new thing we are doing this year is tea time. Autry wanted to reinstate it, as we use to have tea time everyday until the kids got older. She felt we should bring it back, so we did. Everyone enjoys some afternoon tea and the reading of poems and speeches.

And that is our weekend in review.

Not Back To School: Student Photo Week

Not Back to School Blog Hop

I am very happy to have Autry back at home this year. Last year she wanted to go to school, and she had an amazing experience, but she wanted to come home this year. It is great to have her learning with the boys again. Tru is especially enjoying working with his twin sister once again.

Last year we didn’t get a chance to take any formal back to school pics, but this year I wanted to get one pic of everyone together.

My Juggling Act

I don’t often get too personal on this blog, but I am feeling very overwhelmed this day, and since I do have a blog, I thought I would exercise my right to delve into everything that is going on. I am a single mom, and sometimes I feel very alone in the homeschool world because of that. But I am a single mom, and I have to deal with this fact on a regular basis.

I think single mom is the wrong term though. I am not so much a single mom, but an only parent. I have no partner to help me or to share the burden. I have no partner that I can count on and no partner who works hard because they want the kids to be happy. I am all alone in this area, and it is depressing sometimes. I don’t have a partner, and the kids don’t really have a father.

I am also stretched out quite thin. I am homeschooling, working on my teachers credential and my masters, taking care of three very energetic kids, and trying to balance it all. Some days are good and some days are hard. Today is one of the hard days.

But I look at the kids, and they are playing a game together on the ground in the living room. They are laughing with each other, and they are having so much fun. They are in their own little world, and they don’t know I am overwhelmed and tired. The kids are happy, and I am thankful for that.

Spending a day at the studio with my mom

My mom is a painter, and the kids love to paint with her, especially at her studio. Today we spent a few hours with her, and the kids worked on their sketchbooks. The sketchbook project is a great project for the whole family. You sign up on their website and pay for a sketchbook. They send you your sketchbook and a theme. You fill them in and send them back. Then they are grouped by theme and exhibited in different parts of the county. It is a great project to work on for everyone.

Decca forgot his sketchbook, so he painted. I think he preferred painting anyway.

The kids and I have been enjoying ourselves at Disneyland the past few days. We are here celebrating Not Back To School Days through SHEA. One of the great things offered at the conference is Y.E.S. classes. Yesterday the twins took the animation class. They learned the history of animation, and they learned to make a kineograph. They also received a drawing lesson, and watched Turtle Talk with Crush. Overall it was a great class, and the kids hope to come back next year and take more.
